Preterm Birth Initiative featured in Ugandan Newspaper

Check out an article about the Preterm Birth Initiative (PTBi) on New Vision’s webpage! Funded by the Gates Foundation, the Preterm Birth Initiative (PTBi) is aimed at reducing morbidity and mortality from preterm birth in East Africa. For this project, PRONTO developed a facility-based simulation and team-training mentoring curriculum that focuses on identifying, triaging, and managing preterm labour and birth, and caring for preterm infants. Within this curriculum, Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is encouraged and practiced during simulations.

In the article, a midwife explains, “previously, you would put a baby in the incubator and leave without turning it on. We used to think, it was enough to just put the baby in there.” Since PTBi started, healthcare providers now implement evidence-based protocols to ensure preterm babies are closely monitored, Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is initiated, and preterm and high-risk pregnancies are referred to a higher level of care.
